Terms of Service

Effective date: August 13, 2026

Terms of Service Privacy Policy Rental Facilitator Disclaimer

These Terms of Service ("Terms") are a binding agreement between you and Rentul LLC ("Rentul", "we", "us"), which runs the Rentul peer-to-peer rental marketplace (the "Service"). By creating an account or using the Service you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

Please read Sections 8 (no deposit, no damage coverage, no claims), 11 (chargebacks), and the separate Rental Facilitator Disclaimer carefully: Rentul does not protect you against damage, loss, theft, non-return, or non-payment, in either direction.

1. What Rentul is — and is not

Rentul is a venue that connects people who want to lend items with people who want to rent them. When a rental happens, the agreement is directly between the renter and the lender. Rentul is not a party to that rental agreement, is not the owner, renter, or bailee of any item, and does not take possession of, inspect, deliver, or guarantee any item.

Rentul does provide the software, the booking flow, and the payment processing described in Section 5 (through our payment processor, Stripe). Providing payment processing does not make Rentul a party to the rental. See the Rental Facilitator Disclaimer, which is incorporated into these Terms.

2. Eligibility and accounts

You must be 18 or older to use the Service. At sign-up we ask for your date of birth and block the creation of an account for anyone under 18. This is the only age check we perform: we do not otherwise verify your age, and your date of birth is self-reported.

You sign in with an email address and password. You are responsible for your account, for keeping your password secure, and for the accuracy of the information you provide. One person, one account; do not impersonate anyone.

Your campus is self-declared and is not verified by us. Rentul does not perform any student verification, identity verification, or background check, and shows no "verified" badge that reflects any such check. Do not rely on another user appearing to be a student, or on any label in the app, as proof of who they are. See the Rental Facilitator Disclaimer.

3. Listings and lender responsibilities

If you list an item, you represent that you own it and have the right to rent it, that your title, description, and photos are accurate, and that the item is safe and lawful to rent. You may not list any prohibited item (Section 13).

You set your own daily rate, which must be at least $5/day. You are responsible for meeting the renter, handing over and receiving the item, agreeing on the item's condition and return expectations directly with the other person, and for your own tax and legal obligations as a lender.

4. Booking and the rental agreement

A listing is either instant-book or request-to-book:

  • Instant-book: the booking is confirmed immediately when the renter books, with no owner-approval step.
  • Request-to-book: the renter's request is pending until the lender accepts it.

When a booking is created, Rentul opens a private conversation between the two parties so they can arrange the hand-off. A confirmed booking is a rental agreement between the renter and the lender for the dates and item shown.

Days are counted inclusively. A rental is billed for every calendar day from the start date through the end date, counting both ends — so a Saturday-to-Sunday rental is 2 days, and a same-day rental is 1 day. The rental amount is your daily rate times the number of days counted this way. Rentals are limited to 30 days.

5. Payments and service fees

When you book, all payments are processed by Stripe. You enter your card details directly into Stripe's payment sheet; Rentul's own servers never receive or store your full card number.

Rentul charges a service fee to both the renter and the lender on a rental. The fee is marginal and tiered (like income-tax brackets): the rental amount is divided into bands, each band is charged its own rate, and the rate steps down as the rental grows. Because the schedule is marginal, the overall fee is higher on small rentals and falls as the rental gets larger.

The schedule in effect at the effective date, applied to the rental amount (your daily rate times the number of days):

Portion of the rental amountRenter's fee on that portionLender's fee on that portion
The first $4013%7%
The part from $40 to $10011%6%
The part from $100 to $2008%5%
The part above $2006%3%
  • The renter's fee is added to what the renter pays. Your total charge is the rental amount plus your renter's fee.
  • The lender's fee is deducted from the lender's payout. The lender receives the rental amount minus the lender's fee.
  • A minimum service fee of $3 applies to a booking. If the renter's and lender's fees together add up to less than $3, the shortfall is added to the renter's fee. This minimum has its main effect on very small rentals (roughly, rentals under $15), where it raises the effective rate above the headline percentages above.

Example. On a $100 rental, the renter's fee is 13% of the first $40 plus 11% of the next $60 = $11.80, and the lender's fee is 7% of $40 plus 6% of $60 = $6.40. The renter is charged $111.80, the lender receives $93.60, and Rentul's total fee is $18.20.

Before you confirm, the app shows your total (and, for lenders, your net payout), and the amount you are shown is the amount charged. We may change the schedule going forward; a change does not affect a booking that has already been priced.

6. Authorization and capture — how and when your card is charged

Rentul uses authorize-then-capture. Your card is authorized — a temporary hold is placed for the rental total — but not immediately charged:

  • Instant-book: the hold is placed when you book.
  • Request-to-book: your card is saved when you request, and the hold is placed when the lender accepts.

The rental amount is captured (actually charged) at pickup, when the hand-off is confirmed in the app. If a booking is never picked up, the authorization expires and no charge is made. If a booking sits unpaid, we may cancel it automatically after about 24 hours to free the dates. If your bank requires additional authentication (3-D Secure), you may be asked to complete it.

7. Lender payouts

Lenders are paid through Stripe Connect (Express). To list and receive money, a lender must complete Stripe onboarding, during which Stripe collects the lender's identity, date of birth, address, government ID, and bank details directly, under Stripe's own terms and privacy policy. Rental payments are made as destination charges: the lender is the merchant of record for the rental, and funds are routed to the lender's connected Stripe account when the rental is captured at pickup, net of Rentul's service fee.

Payouts from a lender's Stripe balance to their bank follow Stripe's standard Express payout schedule. Rentul does not set a custom payout schedule and does not offer instant payout.

8. No security deposit, no damage coverage, no claims, no recourse

This is important, and it is true in both directions:

  • Rentul does not take, hold, or require a security deposit of any kind.
  • Rentul provides no damage coverage, no protection plan, and no insurance for any item, injury, or loss.
  • Rentul has no claims process. There is no way to file a claim for damage, loss, theft, a no-show, an item that is not as described, or non-return, and no process by which Rentul reviews or pays out on such a claim.
  • If an item is damaged, lost, stolen, returned late, not returned, or not as described, Rentul does not make anyone whole. A lender has no platform recourse to recover a loss, and a renter has no platform recourse if an item is defective, unsafe, or not as described.

If a problem happens during a rental, it is between you and the other person to resolve. You may also have rights outside the Service (for example, small-claims court, or your own insurance). Meeting in a safe place, inspecting the item, and keeping your own records are your protection — Rentul does not provide one.

9. Cancellations

Either party may cancel a booking before pickup — that is, while it is still a pending request or a confirmed-but-not-picked-up booking. When you cancel before the rental amount is captured, the authorization is voided, you are not charged, and no fee is taken.

After the rental is captured at pickup, a booking can no longer be cancelled. Any money returned after that point is a refund (Section 10), not a cancellation. Rentul does not impose a cancellation fee, penalty, deadline, or non-refundable window.

10. Refunds

Refunds are issued only by Rentul, on a case-by-case basis. There is no self-service refund — a renter or lender cannot trigger a refund from the app — and there is no automatic, time-based, or pro-rated-by-cancellation-date refund, and no stated cancellation window. A refund may be full or partial at our discretion.

When we do issue a refund, it is pro-rata across all three parties: the renter is refunded the refunded amount, the corresponding portion of the lender's payout is reversed, and the corresponding portion of Rentul's service fee is returned. To ask about a refund, contact [email protected]. Nothing here obligates Rentul to issue a refund.

11. Chargebacks and disputes

If you dispute a charge with your card issuer (a chargeback), that process is run by the card networks and banks — not by Rentul — and it has real consequences for the other party:

  • When a renter charges back a captured rental, the amount that was paid out to the lender is reversed out of the lender's balance. The renter's money is returned by their issuer; the lender loses the rental proceeds while the dispute is open.
  • If the dispute is later resolved in the lender's favor, Rentul repays the lender the rental amount less Rentul's service fee. If it is not, the reversal stands and the lender is not repaid.

Rentul provides no separate recourse or guarantee around chargebacks in either direction. Disputes about an item, its condition, payment, or a person's conduct are between the users involved (Section 8).

12. Reviews

After a completed booking, each party may leave one review of the other (a rating, optional tags, and an optional note). Reviews are public — visible to anyone, including people browsing without an account. A review is permanent: its author may edit it, but neither the author nor Rentul deletes reviews on request. A review is removed only if the underlying account or booking is deleted.

13. Prohibited items

You may not list, rent, or exchange any of the following through Rentul:

  • Motor vehicles, dirtbikes, e-scooters / e-bikes, mopeds — any motorized vehicle
  • Weapons of any kind
  • Prescription items & medical devices
  • Alcohol / drug paraphernalia
  • Live animals
  • Anything illegal to own or share in California
  • Items you don't own

14. Prohibited conduct

No harassment, threats, hate speech, sexual content, or spam. Do not misuse the Service, attempt to circumvent payments, or use another person's account. Accounts used for prohibited conduct may be removed.

15. Reporting, blocking, and moderation

You can report any listing or the person you are messaging, and block anyone — from an item, a conversation, or your profile. Blocking is enforced by us in both directions: a blocked person's listings are hidden from you and yours from them, and you cannot message each other. A person reviews reports; we aim to respond within 24 hours and may remove content or act on accounts that break these Terms. You can reach us at [email protected] without an account.

16. Deleting your account

You may delete your account at any time in Settings. Deletion is permanent and removes your profile, your listings, and your listing photos, and cascades your bookings, conversations, messages, reviews, and device records.

Some records are retained because we cannot or should not erase them on request: information held by Stripe (your Stripe customer or connected-account record and past payment records) remains with Stripe under Stripe's own retention; and internal payment-event and audit records are kept (with your booking link removed) for legal, accounting, fraud-prevention, and dispute-resolution purposes. See the Privacy Policy for detail.

17. Suspension and termination

Rentul may remove content and suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms or that we reasonably believe create risk or legal exposure. Self-deletion (Section 16) is the only automated account action; suspension or termination of an account by us is done manually.

18. Disclaimers

The Service is provided "as is" and "as available." Rentul does not verify the identity, age, student status, conduct, or trustworthiness of any user, does not inspect or guarantee the condition, safety, legality, or availability of any item, and provides no insurance and no protection of any kind (Section 8). Any badge or label shown in the app is not a guarantee. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied.

19. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Rentul LLC and anyone acting on its behalf will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss of or damage to an item, lost profits, or lost data, arising out of or relating to the Service or any rental. Our total aggregate liability for any claim relating to the Service will not exceed [liability cap]. Rentals happen between users; disputes about an item, its condition, or a user's conduct are between those users.

20. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Rentul LLC from any claim, loss, or expense (including reasonable legal fees) arising out of your listings, your rentals, your content, your conduct, or your violation of these Terms or of any law or third-party right.

21. Governing law and dispute resolution

[Governing law — to be provided by counsel]

[Dispute resolution — to be provided by counsel]

22. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms. Material changes will be notified in the app or by email, and the "Effective date" above will change. Continued use after a change means you accept the updated Terms.
